OSCI and Rehab Without Walls supporting Oregon's spinal cord injury community.

Community Partner Spotlight: Rehab Without Walls

Recovery from a spinal cord injury doesn’t end when someone leaves the hospital. It continues at home and in the community, through all the quiet, hard, hopeful moments when someone starts figuring out what life looks like now.

Supporting SCI rehabilitation in Oregon means being there for those moments, too. That truth is at the heart of why OSCI is so moved by our growing partnership with Rehab Without Walls.

Connecting SCI Rehabilitation in Oregon With Life at Home

Rehab Without Walls meets people where they are, continuing rehabilitation beyond clinical settings and in the places where real life happens. OSCI connects people to peer support, resources, community, and pathways toward greater independence. The Mortensen House adds another important piece to that continuum by providing an accessible home for people in transition.

Together, we’ve been working to make the journey from rehabilitation to community living feel less like falling through the cracks and more like being supported along the way.

That means building stronger referral pathways between our organizations. It means creating opportunities for Rehab Without Walls clinicians to provide therapy at the Mortensen House when appropriate. For those traveling to the Portland area for rehabilitation, it can also mean having something surprisingly difficult to find: a truly accessible, welcoming place to land.

Meeting People Where They Are

Our conversations with Rehab Without Walls have reinforced something important. People recovering from spinal cord injuries rarely need just one thing.

Someone may need ongoing therapy while their home is being modified. Another person may need accessible lodging while still in active rehabilitation. A family might simply need more time and support before the transition home feels possible.

By working together, we can help connect those pieces.

We’re also working to strengthen outreach to hospitals, rehabilitation teams, case managers, and other providers. Our goal is for families to hear about these resources earlier, when they may need them most.

Stronger Connections Build Stronger Communities

This is what partnership means to us. It isn’t two logos side by side. It’s two organizations leaning toward the same person and asking: What do they need next, and how can we help them get there?

We are deeply grateful to Rehab Without Walls for sharing that commitment.

If your organization serves people with spinal cord injuries and sees an opportunity to build something together, we’d love to talk. Contact OSCI to explore becoming a community partner.
