Thursday, May 14th - Women's Health Forum 2: Preventative Care For Women - Zoom + -

Register

Proactive wellness is the foundation of independence. While managing a spinal cord injury requires daily focus, staying ahead of general health milestones is equally vital for long-term vitality.

Join us for this essential session in our ongoing series on Women’s Health After SCI. We are moving beyond injury management to focus on the preventative measures that every woman needs, tailored specifically for the SCI community.

Why Attend This Session?

Preventative care often presents unique logistical hurdles for women with paralysis. This forum addresses those challenges head-on, providing practical advice and expert insights on:

  • Mammograms & Breast Health: Navigating equipment accessibility and positioning tips for a successful, stress-free screening.
  • Managing Cholesterol: Understanding how SCI affects metabolic health and strategies for keeping your heart healthy.
  • The Preventative Roadmap: A guide to the screenings you shouldn’t skip—from bone density scans to routine blood work.
  • Provider Communication: How to advocate for your specific needs in a standard clinical setting.

Our Goal: To empower you with the knowledge to manage your health confidently and ensure your preventative care is as comprehensive as possible.

Thursday, August 13th - Women's Health Forum 3: Mental and Psychosocial Help - Zoom + -

Register

The journey after a spinal cord injury isn’t just physical—it’s deeply emotional and social. Prioritizing your mental well-being is just as critical as managing your physical health.

In this session of our Women’s Health After SCI series, we shift our focus to the “invisible” aspects of living with paralysis. We’ll explore the complex intersection of disability, identity, and mental health, offering tools to help you navigate the psychological landscape of life with an SCI.

Key Discussion Points:

  • Navigating Identity & Self-Esteem: Redefining your sense of self and body image in a world that often lacks representation of women with disabilities.
  • Managing “Burnout” and Stress: Practical coping mechanisms for the mental fatigue that can come with managing a chronic injury and secondary health concerns.
  • Social Connections & Relationships: Addressing shifts in family dynamics, friendships, and romantic life, and how to build a supportive social “ecosystem.”
  • Psychosocial Resources: Identifying when and how to seek professional support, from specialized counseling to peer-led support networks.

Who Is This For?

This session is designed for women at any stage of their SCI journey—whether you are newly injured or have been navigating this path for decades. We aim to foster an environment of shared lived experience, resilience, and authentic conversation.

Perspective: Mental health isn’t a destination; it’s a practice. This session provides the space to discuss the highs and lows of that practice with peers who truly understand.

Thursday, November 12th - Women's Health Forum #4 - Managing Daily Life - Zoom + -

While clinical check-ups are essential, the “real” work of health often happens in the quiet moments of daily routine. Mastering the practicalities of life with a spinal cord injury is key to confidence and spontaneity.

In the final session of our Women’s Health After SCI series, we’re getting candid. We are moving beyond the doctor’s office to discuss the day-to-day management of personal care. This session is dedicated to sharing practical solutions, troubleshooting common hurdles, and discovering the products and techniques that make daily life smoother.

What We’ll Discuss:

  • The Routine: Advanced Bowel & Bladder Management: Moving beyond the basics to discuss timing, troubleshooting accidents, and maintaining skin integrity during your routine.
  • Menstrual Care & Hygiene: Exploring accessible products (from adaptive period underwear to cups/disposables) and managing autonomic dysreflexia or increased spasms during your cycle.
  • Adaptive Dressing & Intimacy Prep: Practical tips for managing clothing changes and personal hygiene that help you feel prepared for whatever the day (or night) brings.
  • The “Travel Toolkit”: How to manage these personal care needs while on the go, in public restrooms, or during travel.

Why This Session Matters:

These topics are often left out of standard medical brochures, yet they impact your quality of life every single day. This forum is a judgment-free zone where lived experience takes center stage, allowing you to learn from experts and peers alike.

Our Philosophy: Knowledge is autonomy. By mastering these daily logistics, you spend less time worrying about your injury and more time living your life.
