Oregon Spinal Cord Injury Connection is now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit!

Oregon Spinal Cord Injury Connection is now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit! This is a big deal for the spinal cord injury community of Oregon and SW Washington because now we can intentionally plan, build, and advocate for our community. How did this happen?!

Since November 2014, families, friends, and people affected by spinal cord injury and disease in Portland and SW Washington have met up at the NW Quimby Lucky Lab. These gatherings happen on the last Monday of every month. From the start, the group received strong support. Each month, 20 to 50 people show up. That kind of turnout is incredible.

Moreover, Ryan Green and Ian Ruder—both long-time wheelchair users who’ve joined groups across the country—told me this is rare. In their experience, few groups draw this much consistent interest. Clearly, something special is happening in Portland.

The energy from these meet-ups sparked something bigger. Encouraged by a few dedicated people, I turned that momentum into a nonprofit—and we made it happen. In December 2015, we incorporated the Oregon Spinal Cord Injury Connection in the State of Oregon. Then, in July 2016, we received our tax-exempt status from the IRS.

Thanks to our amazing board members, Gabrielle Richards—our tireless lawyer—and everyone who joins the meet-ups, support groups, and forums. Your involvement made this possible.

We’re just getting started. The board and I are excited to share our vision with you at the September launch event at Oaks Park in Portland. Please come!
