In Portland, Oregon several community-based organizations have teamed up to meet the need left by complex rehab technology providers who are not able to keep up with the demand for wheelchair maintenance or repairs in a timely manner.
Bike Farm, Oregon Spinal Cord Injury Connection, and Adaptive Sports Northwest provide a free wheelchair maintenance workshop once a month from 6-9PM. The workshop is hosted in a spacious bicycle workshop with volunteer bicycle technicians on hand to support problem-solving and learning. The bike mechanics are oftentimes learning alongside the wheelchair users and offer tools and equipment to support learning, entry-level maintenance, and repairs.
The goal of this program is to provide a service for those who are experiencing an urgent need. The invitation to participate includes bicycle mechanics from bike shops around the city because wheelchair users are known to seek help in bike shops. The workshop is intended to be a resource for everyone.
